Kauno zoologijos sodasXX a. pradžioje prof. Tado Ivanausko sutelkta iniciatyvinė grupė ėmė rūpintis pirmojo Lietuvos zoologijos sodo kūrimu.1935 m. gegužės 3 d. pradėjo veikti Kauno zoologijos sodo akcinė bendrovė, kurios branduolį sudarė žymūs to meto kultūros ir visuomenės veikėjai. Zoologijos sodui parinktas Girstupio upelio slėnis Ąžuolyne – raižyta, gyvūnams laikyti ir eksponuoti tinkama 15 ha ploto teritorija. Per trejetą metų buvo pastatyti visi reikiami statiniai, įrengti voljerai. Kai kuriuos gyvūnus pavyko surinkti Lietuvoje, kitus dovanojo gretimų valstybių zoologijos sodai.

Kauno zoologijos sodas oficialiai atidarytas 1938 m. liepos 1 d. Atidarymo metu buvo tik 40 gyvūnų, daugiausia vietinių, tačiau jau po metų jų pagausėjo iki 150. Lankytojai tada galėjo pamatytikupranugarį, zebrų, asilų, Australijos dingų, beždžionių kapucinų,stumbrų, fazanų, papūgų.

Sunkiausiai zoologijos sodas vertėsi Antrojo pasaulinio karo metais, tuomet dalį gyvūnų teko parduoti, o kitų (vilkų ir šunų dingų) jauniklius likviduoti. Po karo buvo išlikę tik 42 gyvūnai: 25 žvėrys ir 17 paukščių (2 rudieji lokiai, vilkas, meškėnas, barsukas, palšasis grifas, didysis apuokas, kilnusis erelis ir kiti).

1951 m. sode įsteigtas rudųjų meškų voljeras. 1954 m. pradėtas statyti liūtų narvas. 1958 m. gruodžio 4 d. zoologijos sodui suteiktas Respublikinio zoologijos sodo vardas, jis perduotas Kultūros ministerijai. 1989 m. zoologijos sodas priimtas į Europos zoologijos sodų ir akvariumų asociaciją, nuo tada atsivėrė platesnės galimybės dalyvauti retųjų rūšių veisimo programose ir keistis gyvūnais.

2011 m. išleistas zoologijos sodui skirtas pašto ženklas. [1]
